Futures Market : Contractual Arrangement to Restrain Moral Hazard in Teams

چکیده

Holmstrom (1982) argues that a principal is required to restrain moral hazard in a team: wasting output in a certain state is required to enforce efficient effort, and the principal is a commitment device for such enforcement. Under competition in commodity and team-formation markets, I extend his model à la Prescott and Townsend (1984) to show that competitive contracts can exploit the futures market to transfer output across states instead of wasting it. Thus, the futures market replaces the role of principals. An important feature of such contracts is exclusiveness: private access to the the futures market by team members is not allowed. The duality of linear programming is exploited to characterize a market environment and the contractual agreements for efficiency. JEL Classification: D53, D71, D86, L22

The Role of Individual Financial Contributions in the Formation of Entrepreneurial Teams

This paper studies, theoretically and empirically, how entrepreneurs, heterogeneous in how much they are able to contribute to a joint business, organize in partnerships. “When Should Manufacturers Want Fair Trade?”: New Insights from Asymmetric Information

We study a specific model of competing manufacturer-retailer pairs where adverse selection and moral hazard are coupled with non-market externalities at the downstream level. In this simple framework we show that a “laissezfaire” approach towards vertical price control might harm consumers as long as privately informed retailers impose non-market externalities on each other. Giving manufacturer...

Dangerous Liaisons on the Altiplano. Asymmetric Information, Opportunistic Behavior and Sharecropping Contracts in a Mexican Ejido

La Soledad case is illustrative of the contracting issue under conditions where reputation as an enforcement device is ineffective, and where there is no coercive power. Initially, tenancy practices were organized among local actors, on the basis of personal relationships; contractual enforcement was not a critical issue. The introduction of a new crop (potato) by ‘outsiders’ --entrepreneur-typ...

Competition and Moral Hazard

This paper investigates the equilibrium consequences of a contractual market with moral hazard where multiple principals compete each other to offer incentive contracts to agents who choose unobservable ex post actions. We show the following limit theorems: First, when the trade–off between incentive and risk sharing causes the moral hazard problem on the side of agents, the full insurance cont...
